Enjoy the Peace

My part time job while finishing up my undergraduate is nanny for 3 families in Mankato. Each family claims at least one of my weekdays and I venture to their homes in between classes or half days. My car, thus, has become a kiddie cab. Boosters are located in the backseat and kids' music CDs fill up my visor CD holder. The kids usually shout out their music requests as soon as they are buckled in; sometimes before. The other day seemed to be like any other. Already knowing my frequent passenger's favorite tune, I popped in my Disney CD and raced to find the track. William, age 5, looked at me in my rearview mirror and said "I don't want to listen to it. Let's just enjoy the peace."

The statement put me into a full pause. I smiled at him, breathed a sigh and pulled out of the parking lot.

"Let's just enjoy the peace."
First of all, that is not a frequent statement from my charges. I'm always fully charged and ready for whatever loops I'm thrown into when amongst the kids. My natural energy keeps me jiving and the kids' rarely have me settled. But William's comment stuck with me. How often do we run about parading our list of errands or to do's always complaining about time or the distractions that hastle us? It is almost a performance. When I'm in the grocery store or shopping I find that I fill a "role"= stressed, focused, no dilly-dallying. Why? No one is scrutinizing me or judges me if I do not. Heck. If I took off the strain and was just in the moment I may enjoy shopping more.
What if I took at least 5 minutes a day to enjoy the peace? I'm not sure my mind will stop for that long at the start, but after some training and enough days of peace...I think it would be quite nice. And perhaps it will create not only more moments of peace but a peaceful life.
